Five Principles of Passive House Design and Construction

passive house design

A Passivhaus is relatively cheap to run due to the low demand on heating and cooling, and energy efficient appliances. The Passivhaus has a continuous airtight barrier that protects the building from air leakage, heat losses and improves overall thermal comfort. Despite its incredible reputation as the gold standard for sustainable building design, the Passivhaus standard is still not fully understood by many within the profession. At a time when climate change is forcing people across the AEC industry to rethink the way in which they build, awareness of this standard is more critical than ever. Yet, strategies for increasing the sustainability of buildings have been around for decades.

In terms of energy use, how does a passive house compare to a standard house?

The gap between our glove and jacket is a thermal bridge, as is the zipper, which often has an extra flap of insulation to cover it. As long as your contractor loves building, they can learn how to do a Passive House easily. There are a number of contractor training courses available, and the community of contractors and craftspeople familiar with Passive House is constantly growing. Once they take contractor training, contractors should host kickoff meetings with subcontractors to ensure that everyone knows what the goals are. PHIUS was originally an affiliate and approved trainer and certifier for the Passive House Institute.

Net-zero energy homes

In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own. In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. As the demand for sustainable housing continues to grow, so too will the innovation and creativity driving this transformative movement toward a more sustainable and harmonious built environment. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence and data analytics, smart homes can adapt to occupants’ preferences and environmental conditions to maximize efficiency and comfort. Over the course of 20 years, homeowners can save between $10,000 and $30,000 by putting solar panels on their roofs, says Rodriguez. She reasons money isn’t the only thing being saved, pointing to a UC Berkeley study that found a residential solar system can power a home with 80 percent lower carbon emissions than that of fossil fuels.

Radiation Control

At the entrance, mirrors on the ceiling and walls blur the lines between virtual and real, creating depth and tranquility. Free-flowing silhouettes flood the interior, opening up from a glass front punctuated by curved windows. The design explores aesthetic contrasts through the use of color, material, and shape, adding artistic layers to the overall experience. One company with Utah ties is pioneering major inroads into the manufactured housing industry. From programmable thermostats and smart lighting systems to energy-monitoring devices and automated appliances, these technologies empower homeowners to make informed decisions about their energy consumption and reduce waste. Many can be set to function at a lower capacity when occupants are out of the house or asleep, reducing energy use by 15% to 20%.

• Fresh Air with Heat Recovery

Dark exteriors are extremely popular right now, and this home manages to keep the trendy black exterior without sacrificing its energy efficiency. The inside is equally stylish, using exposed wood, old beams, and lots of natural light to create a breathtaking space. We specify and source super-efficient triple-paned, tightly sealed, and insulated windows to satisfy stringent Passive House thermal and airtightness requirements.

It features a beautiful outdoor area that includes a deck, a pool, and a covered seating area seated on 75 rolling acres. Most people have to pay hundreds of dollars a month in power, heating, and cooling costs for their homes. That is why it is extra impressive that this couple from Minneapolis actually built a house that makes money on its utilities. Our walls manage moisture by utilizing the smart vapor permeance benefits of Oriented Strand Board and the hygroscopic properties of cellulose. A semi-vapor open assembly allows for drying in both directions, making it ideal for all climates, and balanced, continuous mechanical ventilation manages interior humidity reducing the amount of moisture that enters the assembly.

How: Passive House Design Principles

The open office space offers visual permeability and clean lines, featuring large floor-to-ceiling windows that merge the interior with the exterior. The interior, conceptualized by founder Fang Lei and the One House team, emphasizes a contemporary, minimalist, and efficient design. This ‘borderless, parallel workspace’ accommodates various work scenarios, aiming to adapt to the future of office spaces and support business growth.

One way to do that is taking note of the orientation of the house in relation to the sun. Using passive house principles, this home combines excellent insulation, solar panels, and clever airflow to use as little power as possible. Since the house runs on solar panels, the excess power is sold back to the power company. The minimal energy use plus the buyback agreement means that this home actually turns a monthly profit on its energy. The upfront capital cost to build a Passive House is slightly higher at 5% - 10% more than a conventional home. You will spend somewhat more on the building envelope but will save on the heating system.

Improving indoor air quality by stopping moisture accumulation is just one way that they achieve this. Homes built to the Passive House standard use a building envelope's first approach consisting of insulation, air sealing, and no thermal bridging. Windows, doors, and any other penetrations in the building envelope are all extremely high-performing. A Passive House is oriented to best take advantage of the sun's energy for heating in the winter and shade in the summer.

The most common thermal bridge is a gap in insulation, but outlets, junction boxes, and plumbing can also act as thermal bridges. Thermal bridges are more common at corners, jogs, balconies, and discontinuities, which is why Passive House designs tend to be simpler. Air tightness minimizes infiltration of outside air and any loss of conditioned air. In these types of homes, for example, stale air from bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas is exhausted out and replaced with fresh air. At least 75 percent of the heat from the exhaust air is transferred to the fresh air by a heat exchanger.

The building envelope is what separates the interior of the building from the exterior; it consists of outside walls, roofs, and floors. In cold climates like Canada, where inside air is heated to keep the building comfortable, some of that heat will be lost as it moves through the envelope (via the process of conduction). In order to reduce this heat loss, insulation made of low-conductivity materials is installed within the wall and roof assemblies.

Foundations, walls, floors, doors, windows, and roofs are insulated without gaps between them. In a Passive House, the walls are thicker, often with three or more layers of materials and insulation cavities between them. The cavities can be filled with as much as 12 inches of densely packed cellulose, fiberglass, or other materials.

The entire building envelope including airtightness, windows, exterior wall systems and insulation are combined to produce significant energy cost savings not possible with conventional building practices. Although dehumidifiers might be used, heat pump hot water heaters also will act to cool and condense interior humidity (where it can be dumped into drains) and dump the heat into the hot water tank. Passive cooling, solar air conditioning, and other solutions in passive solar building design have been studied to adapt the "passive house" concept for use in more regions of the world. Not only are the windows and doors very high-performance, but their placement is essential. Passive House buildings are optimally oriented and designed to make the most of the available natural light and heat. Solar gain through passive solar heating is strictly managed to maximize heat gain in the winter while limiting overheating during the summer.

Taylor Swift Gives Historical Tours of Her Rhode Island Home to Friends and Family

According to Rhode Island Monthly, the couple bought the coastal property soon after the wedding, and they became known for their (as Swift points out herself) “tasteful if a little loud” soirees. In her day, Harkness was as much of a media darling as Swift is now, and often the target of unfavorable headlines and press coverage. Known as the Holiday House, Taylor Swift’s home in Rhode Island was built in 1930 and comes with 7 bedrooms and even more fireplaces (there are 8 of them throughout the residence). Back in 2013, Taylor Swift paid a whopping $17.75 million for the 7-bedroom mansion — along with 700 feet of shoreline on Watch Hill, in Rhode Island.

Taylor Swift’s Historic Rhode Island Seafront Home

Back in 2015, several of her famous friends — including Gigi Hadid, Joe Jonas and Martha Hunt — shared photos from the fun-filled weekend to their Instagrams. High Watch, formerly named Holiday House but locally known as the Harkness House, is an 11,000 square feet (1,000 m2) home situated in Watch Hill, a historic district in Westerly, Rhode Island. An album cover sets the tone for the entire record, and Swift has utilized different colors, styles, and themes to define each era. For example, she chose a black-and-white cover with news headlines for Reputation, gave an outdoorsy escape-to-the-woods feel for folklore, or showcased her signature red lip in Red. The artwork is thoughtfully crafted by Swift and her team, which makes the songs and lyrics inside that much more meaningful.

Even Conan O’Brien, who lives just around the corner, gets a pass from whispered scrutiny, maybe because he bought the house from his parents in 1997. He’s fussed over so little that even someone like me, who lives close enough to go to Watch Hill at least twice a month year-round, didn’t know he lived there until recently. Many fans and news outlets have inferred that the woman in question is Rebekah Harkness, a socialite, philanthropist, and patron of the ballet, who Vogue reports once owned Holiday House, the same Watch Hill, Rhode Island, mansion Swift purchased in 2013 for $17.75 million. The house sat empty on the beach until Taylor bought it in 2013 for an alleged all-cash deal of $17 million. Taylor seems to confirm that she was the house's next owner in the song, singing, "Holiday House sat quietly on that beach / Free of women with madness, their men and bad habits / And then it was bought by me."

Woman charged with trespassing at Taylor Swift's Watch Hill Mansion

Slightly a month after the model was accused of dissing Swift on Instagram, she was spotted out to dinner with the "Swish Swish" singer in Los Angeles. During an interview with The Sunday Times, Kloss was asked to share her thoughts about Kim Kardashian, who was in involved in a heated feud with Swift at the time. On the evening of her 24th birthday, Kloss shared a photo of Swift's face on her screen, the iPad sitting next to a bouquet of sunflowers. The group — which included Swift's then-love interest Tom Hiddleston, Hadid, Delevingne, Kloss, and more — was photographed celebrating the occasion wearing red, white, and blue attire. Swift hosted a star-studded Fourth of July party at her 11,000-square-foot mansion in Rhode Island, which was built in the '30s and reportedly cost $17.75 million. "If each like was a mile, I'd get to the moon and back 107 times. Can't thank you enough for the love," Kloss wrote.

Dubbed the “Holiday House,” the Watch Hill mansion was bought by Swift in 2013, complete with an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a past that ties it to the Standard Oil fortune. The songwriter spun the story of the house’s past — and the divorcee who lived there, Rebekah Harkness — into the song "Great American Dynasty” in her eighth studio album, "Folklore." Dubbed “High Watch”, it sits on the highest point in Watch Hill, a historic district in Westerly, Rhode Island. It is situated on 5 acres of land and features 700 feet of shoreline with views of Little Narragansett Bay.

It’s well known around these parts that comedian Conan O’Brien is a New Englander, with a Boston, Irish Catholic background and a Harvard degree to boot. Slightly less known is that his family has a vacation home in Watch Hill, which the "Conan" host bought in 1997. From the mansions of Newport to more casual homes in Watch Hill and Warwick, here are seven homes that are owned by some well-known celebrities. Chief Paul Gingerella of the Westerly Police Department told The Washington Post that the woman, who was detained on Monday, had visited the residence several weeks earlier and was warned by police not to return. The full story of Holiday House is featured in season 3 of House Beautiful's haunted house podcast, Dark House. Taylor Swift is notorious for her autobiographical style of songwriting, incorporating her own life experiences into her music.

Comedian Jay Leno isn’t necessarily known for being a gilded mansion kind of guy, but he has one — Seafair, on Ocean Drive in Newport. But then again, just last year, Swift told Ellen DeGeneres that her favorite place to go on holiday was still Rhode Island. An ecologically fragile barrier beach and protected bird sanctuary, this 1.5-mile slice of coastline is considered one of the state's hidden gems.

May 4, 2014: They take a photo together at a friend's birthday party

The singer explained that she "pleaded for a chance to own my work" for years before the sale but was instead offered to "sign back up to Big Machine Records and 'earn' one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in." The music executive purchased Big Machine Label Group — and Swift's masters — for a reported $300 million in June 2019. After news of the acquisition broke, Swift aired her grievances in a Tumblr post. She cited the importance of acknowledging the difference between "friendships" and "situationships" in her 20s. On the afternoon of Swift's 29th birthday, the model shared a photo of the pair at the 2015 AMAs.

Joking that she was the "5th wheel" on a boat tour of River Thames, Kloss shared a photo of herself with Swift and then-boyfriend Calvin Harris, along with Hadid and her then-boyfriend Joe Jonas (whom Swift also dated in 2008). She also seemed to push her feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian to the wayside (though it would soon be reignited once again). After Swift appeared on "The Tonight Show," the model posted a photo of their interview on Instagram.

A representative for Kloss told the publication that Swift couldn't attend due to prior commitments. A source close to both Kloss and Swift told Page Six that the "Delicate" singer was invited to both events. While Swift didn't appear in any of the photos from the event, Perry and her beau Orlando Bloom did. Several days later, Jennifer Lawrence joked that Kloss and Swift's distance "keeps her up at night" during a live interview with The New York Times. Fans began accusing Kloss of taking a side in the feud by writing Perry's lyrics on her Instagram and flooding the post with comments. In the photo, Kloss and Swift kiss Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor.

"I think she's been a lovely person to me in the past. Look, I really don't know her that well," she said. "When you're halfway around the world & your best friend still finds a way to celebrate 24 with you," she wrote, tagging Swift. While her Tribeca apartment underwent renovations, Swift rented a West Village property on Cornelia Street that reportedly cost $40,000 per month, according to TMZ.

The similarities between Taylor and Rebekah may also go much deeper than shared real estate. Much like Rebekah was called out in the press on numerous occasions for being a controversial figure, Taylor has been scrutinized for everything from her dating history to her "squad" of celebrity friends whom she used to frequently attend events with. Taylor makes this connection between the two in the last chorus of the song, singing, "Who knows, if I never showed up, what could've been / There goes the loudest woman this town has ever seen / I had a marvelous time ruining everything." Fans got a rare glimpse into Swift's home life in 2016 when she made headlines for an elaborate Fourth of July party, which featured several of her A-list celebrity friends in attendance, including Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and GiGi Hadid. In a now-deleted Instagram post (via Business Insider), Swift shared photos of the partygoers on the beach, at the pool, and in front of the giant inflatable water slide that read, Taymerica, causing many to draw further parallels between Swift and the house's predecessor. A big star with a big reputation, Taylor Swift is arguably the most well-known of Rhode Island’s celebrities.

Kloss also shared a behind-the-scenes photo with Swift with the lyrics from "Love Story" ("We were both young when I first saw you"), her favorite of Swift's songs. It was known prominently as a site of the superstar’s legendary Fourth of July bashes that one year involved a massive, patriotic inflatable slide. Hadid is no doubt familiar with the estate, having attended such parties as part of Swift’s A-list squad. As a proper Newport mansion would, Ocean Lawn, built in 1889, has 515 feet of ocean frontage, 13 bedrooms and 10 full bathrooms and one half bathroom, and his-and-hers libraries.

Harkness was married to William Hale Harkness, whose family founded the Standard Oil Company. After William's death in 1954, it was reported that Rebekah infuriated her neighbors with her quirky and wild antics. Swift includes details in her song about how Rebekah filled the pool with champagne, threw luxurious parties, and played cards with Salvador Dali. The singer also draws parallels between Rebekah's reputation and her own, especially when it comes to their shared tendency to upset society for not always doing what is expected of them. In the lyrics of Taylor Swift's song, "The Last Great American Dynasty," she tells listeners that her Rhode Island mansion sat empty on the coast for 50 years before she purchased it. She also mentions a woman named Rebekah, and it didn't take fans long to discover that the woman in question was Rebekah West Harkness, an heiress from St. Louis who once owned the property, as reported by The Washington Post.

With the 2020 release of her eighth studio album, Folklore, fans got the opportunity to see a different side of Swift, as she moved away from writing music from her own perspective and, instead, chose to share other people's stories. "I found myself not only writing my own stories, but also writing about or from the perspective of people I've never met, people I've known, or those I wish I hadn't," she explained in a tweet announcing the arrival of her album. Swift released her 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department," on April 19, 2024. The deluxe edition includes a song called "Thank You Aimee," which fans have interpreted as a Kardashian diss track. Given their history, fans wondered if the supermodel's photo was a nod to Swift's album, though she never directly mentioned "Folklore" or Swift in her post.

Taylor Swift loves a love story, and she’s willing to do more than croon ballads about it. The Eras superstar lent her Rhode Island home to close friend Gigi Hadid to escape to a private getaway with new love interest Bradley Cooper, a source told UK’s Mirror on Saturday. It was the spot of her much-talked-about Fourth of July parties from 2013 to 2017, and last summer Blake Lively posted photos of herself and husband Ryan Reynolds visiting there. Swift has said that her biggest mistake in creating her public image was not being forthcoming enough about how carefully crafted it was. She brought in hordes of celebrities for her famous — and perfectly Instagrammed — Fourth of July parties. She did exactly the kind of things that a modern-day Rebekah Harkness would have done.

Located directly in front of the Manhattan Beach Pier, it’s an easy stop while out enjoying the downtown (though making a reservation ahead of time is usually a must). The menu features seasonal highlights from Southern California’s bounty of fresh produce, and the thoughtful cocktail and wine programs complement the food perfectly. But with the Strand House, the Zislis Group is trying something different from its successful run of beachy restaurants. It has overhauled the former Beaches and turned it into a lavish three-level restaurant and lounge that looks more to Hollywood for its style cues than to the town’s laid-back beach culture. And the Cal-Mediterranean food borrows from what’s perennially popular in L.A.

This is Doc Brown’s house in the Back to the Future trilogy. In the scenes taking place in 1985, the mansion no longer exists and Doc lives in his garage/laboratory which in real life is the carriage house turned giftshop. The Last House on the Left is a 2009 revenge horror thriller film directed by Dennis Iliadis and written by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth. A remake of the 1972 film of the same name, it stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, Aaron Paul, Spencer Treat Clark, Riki Lindhome, Martha MacIsaac, and Sara Paxton. The film follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and left for dead by a family of violent fugitives.

The outdoor patio area looks straight out of the tropics, adding a very vibrant and bright tone to your film. There’s even an outdoor pool area which fits in perfectly with the surroundings — and lends itself perfectly for the camera. An oddity of the ages, entering this pseudo-neglected loft is like taking a step into the past. A true product of a time bygone, the plot is even furnished with vintage decor and furniture. Styled to look from the 1920’s, there’s plenty of exposed beams which capture the rustic aura perfectly.

The original script by Alleca included elements of supernatural horror, which prompted the studio to reject it and bring in Ellsworth for rewrites. Principal photography began in March 2008 in Cape Town and Helderberg Nature Reserve and concluded in May. The Last House on the Left was theatrically released in the United States on March 13, 2009, and was a modest box office success, grossing $46 million against its $15 million budget. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with several deeming it worthy of praise in comparison to other horror films and remakes in general, while others considered it inferior to the original.

Simply type “website design” or “website building” in the search bar and you’ll have thousands of offers appear on your screen in seconds. So, in general, Fiverr is a perfect place to find inexpensive services for your business as long as you keep an eye out for any red flags and check the reviews from previous clients. I have used Fiverr many times and always have had success with the business partners I choose to help me in whatever service I need. It is important to note that not all of the designers offer the same services.

This will help people find your work more easily, and it will make it easier for you to track your progress. Be sure to update your tags when you make changes to your work or when the content of your work changes. After a buyer receives the work they ordered, they receive all rights for it, though Fiverr retains the right to use all published and delivered works for their own marketing and promotion.

Dale finds a designer with a five-star rating and 84 completed projects who offers to create a WordPress website for $100. He also finds another designer who offers to create a website for $30 with two pages, design customization, content uploading, and responsive design. The $30 offer seems too good to be true, but Dale decides to give it a try as well. Overall, Fiverr is a great option for businesses that need web design services. There are plenty of talented designers on the platform, and you can find services to fit just about any budget. Keep in mind that because there are so many designers on Fiverr, it’s important to take the time to read reviews and look at portfolios before hiring anyone.

Fiverr Website Design: Pros and Cons

fiverr website design

For businesses looking to create a truly professional website design, pro provides this distinction with verified pro sellers. While projects may say starting at $5, most professional website design projects will end up costing you a bit more than the initial starting price. Once you start adding on pages, features, or other elements, the price can quickly climb. This isn’t always the case, but make sure you know exactly what’s included in the quoted price before you pay for a job, including how many revisions rounds are allowed. This software offers pre-made templates, user-friendly visual editors, providing users with web hosting, a domain name, customer support, and various helpful app integrations.

You’ll see dozens of options from Fiverr Pro, along with thousands of other offers. I’d recommend Divi by Elegant Themes if you want an easy-to-use drag and drop builder or StudioPress themes if you like any of their designs. Building a website on WordPress doesn’t have to be hard, especially with an easy-to-use drag and drop theme. Well, for starters you have a proper website and not something like johnthewriter.blogspot.com. Also WordPress (WordPress.org not WordPress.com) is an easy to use platform that can grow with you and your business. Case Studies on your freelance website are one of the best ways to generate leads and close new clients.

However, some improvements can be made, such as making the call-to-action button more prominent and adding separate buttons for different sections. Another minus part is the contact form didn't work, but it's not a big issue for him. The customer service department can also get involved in the event that there is a dispute over a purchased gig.

Fiverr has many freelancers on their platform that will offer website designing, but should you use it? Well, first, you need to do some research on the freelancer you will choose. Once you are satisfied with the information they have given you, then hire them. You can expect to pay anywhere from $5 up to $600 for a professional, customized website for your business, with the average Fiverr designer charging in the range of $30-$60. Make sure to look out for any additional fees such as service fees, expedited delivery charges, and additional file types that aren’t included. The cost of website design can vary depending on factors like the complexity of the project, the number of pages, and any custom features needed.

Solutions to Problems Only Freelancers Face

Most portfolios don’t have testimonials that allow you to share other great skills that you bring to the table like ease of working, your communication skills etc. A freelance website is so much more than just a place to display the things you’ve done. While a portfolio page may have it’s place on a freelance website, your freelance website is mainly used to show your expertise in your niche. Fiverr gives you seller transparency, which means the seller profiles are detailed. “Pro” sellers Fiverr have vetted also display badges on their profiles. We hope that this article helped you get a better understanding of how much does it cost to build a website.

If you’re thinking about using Fiverr for your web design needs, you may be wondering if it’s a good idea. The support section allows you to join a community of users who you can contact on a series of forums that all update constantly. There is also a blog run by the company where you can get answers, and if that fails, you can reach out to the company through a contact form on the website. The seller must deliver the product in keeping with the description in the ad and according to the advertised deadline. Once it is delivered it’s marked as complete by the client, who then can rate the seller. Sellers must also scan all transferred files for viruses or malware.

He mentions that this experiment was purely for educational purposes and not meant to criticize or make fun of the designers. Now, I will share a story from Create a Pro Website Youtuber (Dale McManus). In this video, they will order a website design service from Fiverr. If you’re looking to design a website with Fiverr Pro, the site makes it easy for you. It first asks if you need to update an existing one or create a new one.

While some designers are a hit or miss, Fiverr’s rating system makes it a lot easier to weed out the good from the bad. Most designers offer unlimited revisions and fast turnarounds, too. When it comes to finding out how much does it cost to build a website it’s not just about the website building method you choose. This price includes the website itself and how much help you will need with it. However, keep in mind that creating a truly effective marketing strategy takes more than social media posts and on-site SEO. You’ll be able to sell unlimited products, accept donations, create gift cards, easily manage inventory and shipping.

Almond offers product designs and creates concept sketches for clients. She said she helps clients "create the products that they're going to be able to sell." Based on her Fiverr profile, basic hand sketches for a product concept cost $750. Prices increase to $1,000 for digital sketches with color and $1,250 for 3D mockups. She also has prices listed for designing a client's product for 3D printing and prototyping.

Most companies aren’t looking to hire a jack of all trades, they’re looking to hire specific specialists to solve specific problems. Not only does this filter the people that contact her, but it shows her clients that she’s focused on one topic and not trying to do everything. Once your website is done, you can also go back to Fiverr and get more advertising services, like video creation or lead generation, etc. If you use a website builder, some level of support might be included within your monthly plan.

Original Blend Downeast Cider House

downeast cider house

Corvallis, Oregon-based 2 Towns Ciderhouse makes craft cider using fresh-pressed, 100 percent Northwest apples and is one of the county’s most respected craft cider makers. Mark – This is a fun twist on the Modern Cider style. I enjoyed the unfiltered character and I’m sure they are really trying to capture the fresh pressed cider (sweet cider) vibe and they totally nailed it. It is a simple, apple forward cider that is smooth and quaffable. It looks like they only used fresh apple juice and I assume they back-sweeten with some more apple juice.

Unfiltered

Wait times vary but can be anywhere from 5 to 55 minutes during peak hours. We do our best to turn tables over but ask for your patience. In 2013 Sheehan Family Companies acquired a greater LA area wholesale operation and renamed it Craft LA. Craft LA has a portfolio of top craft beer and cider brands and imports. Craft LA serves Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Bernadino counties with a commitment to timely, enthusiastic and responsive service.

We’ve gone from parking lot parties to a full blown taproom with multiple pop-up bars. We’ve continued to evolve but remain focused as ever on that half-baked dorm room idea. KIDS AND BABIES ARE NOT TAPROOM FANS.we love kids.

Jobs in the Beer Industry

Sometimes, it can be hard for the men to adjust to how quickly they’ve expanded operations — from three guys to roughly 40 full-time and 150 part-time workers. Brockman described perplexing situations, like realizing he needed to create a holiday schedule for employees, and a policy around taking free cider home. Every thursday through sunday, we turn the middle of the production floor at the cider house into a taproom and open it to visitors. However, if you have concerns or problems with the products you receive, please contact us at   within 14 days of receiving your order. In addition, they will distribute limited-release ciders that previously have included ingredients such as Southern California’s prolific prickly pear and Willamette Valley black currants. 2 Towns ciders will be available at Whole Foods, BevMo! He’s currently fixated on creating a “tart and sweet” Granny Smith apple cider, but it’s proving quite difficult because the apple’s high acidity causes the cider to eat through the packaging. “Even as recently as two years ago, we did everything,” Brockman said. “It was just three people and a queue of things to do and we just took turns.” These days,  Ross Brockman and Mosher work most closely on sales and marketing, while Matt oversees operations, production, packaging, and finance.

But the trio soldiered on until they’d created a freshly-pressed, unfiltered cider that tasted nothing like “that over-processed, super-filtered, boxed-apple-juice kind of cider,” Brockman said. When Brockman and Mosher were about to graduate from Bates College with degrees in philosophy and economics, they had no actual plans for real-world jobs. Both were half-heartedly studying for the GMAT and making hard cider as a hobby, thanks to the steady stream of apples Manter got from his centuries-old family orchard. Tyler Mosher was born on Boston’s South Shore, grew up in Northern California and went to Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Downeast offers tours at its Charlestown location, but warns visitors of the “gritty production space.” “Do not expect the gorgeous beer hall at Harpoon, or the museum at Sam Adams,” reads the company’s blog. At Downeast Cider House the cider starts with a blend of apples — McIntosh, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and others — and each apple brings different characteristics to the cider. One day, they looked up and asked whether they were actually going to take the exam.

Afterwards, be sure to grab some Downeast merch and stock up on cans, growlers, or even kegs to take home with you. At 2 Towns Ciderhouse we believe that the long history of cidermaking demands respect and deserves to be done right. Starting with the highest quality whole ingredients from local farms, we take no shortcuts in crafting our ciders. We never add any sugar, concentrates or artificial flavors, and instead use slow, cold fermentation methods to allow the fruit to speak for itself. As a family-owned company, we are committed to the growth of our team and enrichment of our communities.

They realized the answer was “no” and decided to focus on cider-making full time. WE ARE A 21+ FACILITY.at both the cider house / taproom and our outdoor pop-up, all members in your party (yes, even your dd!) must show an ID to enter, no exceptions. Despite Downeast’s success, Brockman said they’re always looking for ways to improve the business and develop new products. The Downeast founders later settled in the Boston area, and they currently operate in a 9,000-square-foot Charlestown warehouse directly beneath the Tobin Bridge.

Most of the major hard ciders are made from concentrate, but Downeast’s is unfiltered and fermented with ale yeast. “We knew nothing about apples, nothing about hard cider,” Brockman said, describing hundreds of different test batches and bleary workdays that started at 4 a.m. They came into the craft cidery game just as cider started booming alongside the waves of craft breweries popping up across New England. Brockman gets borderline offended when visitors assume Downeast’s founders are wunderkinds.

A 16,000-square-foot space in East Boston’s Boston Harbor Shipyard will open soon. They moved the operation from their dorm rooms to the Central Maine Power mill in Waterville, Maine, before relocating to a warehouse in Leominster. Who wants to be wearing close toed shoes and safety goggles when you can just sit at your table with a view of the whole thing? Seriously, our taproom is in the middle of it all and the walk to the bathroom is essentially a self-guided tour of our entire production line.

We take pride in producing true Northwest craft cider. For more information on 2 Towns Ciderhouse, visit Corvallis, Ore., — 2 Towns Ciderhouse is excited to announce its partnership with Craft LA, a Los Angeles area distribution company. Craft LA now distributes craft cider throughout the LA area, including Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Bernadino counties.

The Last House on the Left movie review 2009

Just be sure to watch out for the oncoming traffic and you’ll be fine. The next morning, Mari and Phyllis are bound, gagged, and put in the trunk of Krug's car and transported to the woods. Phyllis is forced to urinate in her jeans, and Mari and Phyllis are forced to perform sexual acts on each other.

Movie and TV Show Houses in Brentwood

Distributor Hallmark Releasing, in partnership with American International Pictures, gave him and Craven funding after the box office success of Cunningham's Together (1971). It is also true that director and Dennis Iliadis and his cinematographer Sharone Meir do a smooth job of handling space and time to create suspense. The film is an effective representative of its genre, and horror fans will like it, I think, but who knows? I'm giving it a 2.5 in the silly star rating system and throwing up my hands. Rich in character and having an onscreen presence, these listings are the perfect to capture different moods and tones within the retro home style.

Movie and TV Show Houses in Century City

The Gamble House in Pasadena is one of my favorite homes to visit. It is filled with fascinating details and a tour is well worth your time. I recommend visiting The Gamble House to admire the architecture and history as much as I recommend visiting it as a filming location. I have toured the house for free on two different occasions which you can read about here.

Popular movies coming soon

Located on the Universal Studios backlot, it's been featured in many television programs and movies. It also served as one of the houses on Wisteria Lane in the popular television show Desperate Housewives. The Happy Days house was the home of the fictional Cunningham family in the sitcom filmed from 1974 to 1984. You won't find the porch swing or Fonzie's motorcycle parked on the front lawn, but, otherwise, the Happy Days house looks much the same as it did. You may find a private security guard driving around the neighborhood, though.

However, if you’re a fan of The Big Bang Theory (and old Sheldon) you can see Sheldon and Leonard’s apartment and even sit in Sheldon’s spot. I grew up a big fan of Hilary Duff and always watched her movies. So when a friend of mine posted a picture of this house I knew I had to see it in person. It was a very short drive from Casa Walsh and was close to Eaton Canyon where I was hiking later that day. This house is picturesque and has a fabulous fairytale vibe to it. The Father Of The Bride House is one of my favorites because it looks like such a perfect family home.

Movie and TV Show Houses in Long Beach

I hope that by sharing my adventures I am able to help you discover new and exciting places in LA. Estelle and her husband rush into the woods, where they find Mari's body and decide to take revenge. Estelle pretends to seduce Weasel, bites off his penis, and leaves him to bleed to death. Krug escapes into the living room and overpowers John before manipulating Junior into killing himself.

Movie and TV Houses in Hollywood

As a huge fan of The Golden Girls seeing their “Miami” house in person was a thrill! I recently had the opportunity to see the inside of the home when it went on sale as it turns out that I knew the realtor. I wasn’t feeling well the day I was supposed to go so I had to pass on the experience.

The film features several Los Angeles locations, but the climax was filmed at here, where the story's star Grace lives in the apartment complex. The Dead Again "house" is on High Tower Drive, off Camrose Drive west of Highland Avenue. The closest you can get by automobile to the Dead Again house is the dead-end street below. The tower houses an elevator that carries residents to their homes.

Sadie awakens and John shoots and wounds her in the neck, allowing Krug to escape through the window and into their house. Finding Francis dead, Krug realizes that they are Mari's parents. John and Justin break in and Sadie beats them with a shower curtain rod, almost knocking them out until Emma shoots Sadie through her left eye, killing her.

Phyllis distracts the kidnappers to give Mari an opportunity to escape but is chased by Sadie and Weasel, while Junior stays behind to guard Mari. Mari tries gaining Junior's trust by giving him her necklace and calling him "Willow". Phyllis stumbles across a cemetery where she is cornered and stabbed by Weasel. Mari convinces Junior to let her go, but her escape is halted by Krug. Mari vomits, quietly says a prayer, and walks into a nearby lake, where Krug fatally shoots her.

In August 2006, Rogue Pictures finalized a deal to remake The Last House on the Left (1972) with original writer and director Wes Craven as a producer. In 1972, he did not have the budget to film every piece of the story he wanted to tell. The house from Young Sheldon is not in Texas, it is a short drive from the Warner Bros Studio where the tv series is filmed. If you take the Warner Bros Studio Tour you might get to see some places in the backlots where the show has been filmed but they never open up the sets in the soundstages for viewing.

Justin is the only one to deduce that the inhabitants, John and Emma, are Mari's parents, and intentionally leaves Mari's necklace on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari barely alive on their porch, and the necklace on the counter, they realize that Mari's tormentors are the people in their guest house. A rustic Spanish Mission Home with plenty of European airs, there are a lot of different areas and aesthetics on site which really add to the value derived from filming here. Set on a half acre site which has been landscaped for the camera, there are plenty of flowery and rocky seating areas outside, and another one near the small, yet, eye-catching fountain. With Classic Los Angeles vibes and with a view overlooking the Hollywood hillside, this bungalow offers a lot of diverse looks. White on the inside with dashes of primary colors, tasteful wall art, and bold carpets, your certain to get a properly lit frame for your scene.

house on the left film

After HGTV did the makeover of the house I was hoping that they might open it up for fans to see. It just happens to be five minutes away from my favorite place to eat. I definitely recommend getting food from Aroma Coffee and Tea while you’re in the area. I wish I could visit the iconic Braverman house that Zeke and Camile owned on Parenthood but that was built on the Universal Backlots.

Craven cut the film numerous times for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to rate it R. Internationally, the United Kingdom refused to certify the film for release, and while briefly released on home video in the 1980s, the "video nasty" scare led to the banning of the film until 2002. The Last House on the Left was released in the United States on August 30, 1972. While the film initially received a polarizing reception from critics, it was highly profitable, grossing over $3 million at the domestic box office.

John Connor lives with his foster parents at this house in Canoga Park. It isn’t the most glamorous or stunning house to visit but for fans of the movie, it can still be fun to see. The craftsman-style house is located near downtown Long Beach. North of Long Beach in San Pedro you can find the spot that was used for the school Anchor Beach on the series which you can read about in this post. While the majority of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was filmed on location in Chicago, there were a few scenes that were filmed in the LA area.

TAMPA, FL — The lifestyle website, Gayot, has released its annual ranking of the best steak houses in the country and, as in previous years, the list features Bern's Steak House in Tampa. If your requested date or time is not available, you are welcome to check back periodically either online or by phone, however due to the volume of requests, we do not have a call back/waiting list. After hours of eating and drinking, settling into a nook one among the room’s woozy lighting felt trippy and out of time, like a tiki-themed David Lynch movie filmed in an alternate universe. It was rich just to sit and listen and people-watch. As delightful as they were, I could barely muster bites of banana cream pie and macadamia ice cream. Somehow I managed my glass of 1977 D’Oliveiras Bual Madeira much more successfully.

We really enjoyed the Caesar Salad prepared from scratch at our table (extra cost if you choose not to have the salad that comes with the entrees), which was the best caesar salad we've ever had. It was fresh and packed with flavor and had a touch of saltiness from the anchovies. It also paired nicely with the complimentary bread we received that was a bit crunchy like croutons. Florida has quite a few iconic, landmark restaurants that have withstood the test of time, like the famed Columbia restaurant, for instance. Dining at these places not only provides you with a meal that has been perfected over the years but also a place that is riddled with history. We have one particular steakhouse that fits perfectly, making it a treasure and also a delicious meal that will be most memorable.

Fun things to do in NYC this weekend, including the Big Apple’s newest bar openings.

Novikas said many people prefer to just stay on the bus and party. If you plan on visiting on a weekend at prime time, make sure to reserve a table a month in advance. I called the restaurant almost three weeks in advance to make a reservation and the earliest available time they had was 9PM on a weekend. They informed me that in order to get a table at a decent time at their restaurant, I would have to book at least one month in advance. Bern’s exists in its own west Florida dimension, an icon of eccentricity and excellence. They started their steakhouse with Bern overseeing the kitchen and Gert running the floor.

THE BERN’S FAMILY

These steaks are just as good (or even better) as similar high-end steakhouses like Ruth's Chris. However, unlike the other high-end chain steakhouses, you don't have to order à la carte. All entrees come with French Onion soup, onion rings, a choice of various salads, vegetables of the day, and a loaded baked potato. Words such as iconic and legendary are often used to describe this historical and storied establishment.

Whatever that experience is – it will differ from person to person – but it must involve enjoying an antiquity. An old bottle of wine, to be purchased and shared with strangers. Jackets and ties are encouraged, but not officially required.

affordable tablets with 32GB of storage

So much has made Bern’s Steak House a destination and conversation-starter in its almost sixty years in business, but for first-timers the surprise always begins with the building itself. Once a small mall, it’s a multi-leveled, disproportionate construct plastered with white stucco and all but windowless. Without the restaurant's sign out front it could be mistaken for a distribution center or a sound stage. In the foyer, gilded padding wraps around stairway rails and an antique bust sits near an ornate chair that could double, in a pinch, as a throne. Painted portraits hang on a craggy white brick, doused in eerie light from wrought-iron fixtures across the room that reflect the glow of scarlet wallpaper.

It's a very intimate dining experience and it doesn't stop there. We were given a large menu (basically a book) with nearly 50 dessert choices and more than 1,000 dessert wines and spirits to choose from. Be prepared to reserve 3-4 hours of your time for this dining experience if you are going to the dessert room (and a Bern's experience is not complete without ending the night in the dessert room). We had reservations at 9PM and did not leave Bern's until 1AM. Bern's Steak House takes their last reservation at 10PM on the weekdays and 11PM on the weekends but they will stay open until the very last customer has fully enjoyed the entire Bern's experience. They are trimmed and cut after you order, and broiled over real charcoal.

The steakhouse’s mutability, coupled with our everlasting blood lust for charred beef, means the genre will never fade. St. Petersburg-based Star Trolley filled a void when it started in 2021, providing festive transportation for weddings. Owner Richard Novikas started it after he inherited a fleet of trolleys and busses from his family’s business in New Jersey. Once business started booming, Novikas considered a plan for his 44-passenger transit bus. Inspired by a trip to The Ringling Museum in Sarasota where he saw an antique circus train car, he turned it into a 1920s speakeasy. Novikas did all the work himself, gutting the bus and building out the bar and seating.

Or if you’re looking for more information about this iconic steakhouse and its decadent desserts, check out the website or Facebook Page. The in-house cellar actually isn't able to house all of their wines, so they have a second storage unit off their premises down the street. The guide gave us a tour of their oldest to most expensive wines and some other interesting tidbits like how they keep a backup generator just in case the electricity goes out during hurricane season.

If you have already secured your dinner reservation, there is no need to call the restaurant to reserve a dessert room table, one has already been secured for you.

If you're in Tampa, this is definitely a reservation you'll want to make and don't skip the dessert room. Bern’s can put a candle in the dessert of the person celebrating while in the Harry Waugh Dessert Room. Please make sure to notate the occasion when making your reservation or let your dessert room server know the occasion the evening you dine with us. Only still photos are permitted while dining at Bern’s. Videos are not allowed in the dining rooms or any portion of the tour.

If you're a fan of French Onion Soup, you will really enjoy this one. We also appreciated that they didn't present a huge bowl of the soup to fill us up before the steaks came out. The worst thing you can do is fill yourself up with all the appetizers before the main course.

We will make all the arrangements for you at that time. The experience is what sets Bern's apart from any other restaurant we have been to. Not only is the food and service exceptional but after your meal, every guest is given a complimentary tour of the kitchen and wine cellar. There will be slabs of beef cut from the short loin and tenderloin, potatoes in myriad guises, and outlandish desserts for which no one saves room. Eating at a chophouse is America’s most universal ritual for indulgence.

The waiter will cut and prepare the steak for you at the table as well. Bern was a shrewd tinkerer who nurtured obsessions and found ways to incorporate his fixations into the steakhouse — particularly when it came to wine. He purchased so many cases that he eventually bought warehouse space in the neighborhood for storage.

Downeast cider house was founded by ross brockman and tyler mosher during their senior year of college. After a considerable amount of time spent on the family orchard, an affinity for farm-fresh apple products was born. Meanwhile, at school, the guys could always be found studying.

The Cider House is where we research, develop, produce, and package all of our cider. Thursday through Sunday, we turn the middle of our production floor into a taproom and open it to visitors. We are 21+ and visitors must have ID's to enter. Our Cider House Taproom is a unique experience and you should read through the rest of this page and/or our FAQ page to know what to expect ahead of your visit. Each flight comes with 4 flavors and with 12 rotating taps, you can choose all your faves or be one of the first people to test a brand new, taproom-exclusive flavor that may or may not hit the market someday.

While in school, Tyler decided to apply his dream of starting a company to apples and began making hard cider with a few friends. Downeast Cider House is now producing cider in Boston, MA. Mosher was also named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list of Food & Drink entrepreneurs in 2014. We’ve expanded from that dorm room to biggest cider brand in New England.

There is a very light musty or what I call “brown-bag” character to it that is from the oxidized juice that I doubt would be there if the cider was filtered. I really enjoy it even though I typically prefer less sweet cider. Inspired by craft beer and cider’s popularity elsewhere in the world, aspiring vintners all over the United States began making hard cider a few years ago. Many vintners stuck to the traditional high-alcohol and dry finish fermentation techniques passed down from the United Kingdom. Others decided to let wild yeast naturally ferment the juice leading to the acidic and musty flavored cider like those in Spain’s Basque region. Some have even dared to emulate the strictly enforced French techniques by producing a sweeter lower alcohol “cidre.” The founders of Downeast Cider House took a different route.

But they don't really love us and to be honest, we get it. Our floors are concrete, we have no food, no non-alcoholic beverage options, and no ball pits. Everyone in the cider house must be seated–and with lots of fancy cider-making machinery, ingredients, and chemicals around, we cannot allow children (or adults, for that matter) to be wandering, toddling, or running around. That being said,  if your kid is 10 years old or younger, we won't make them wait outside or anything like that, we just ask that they are seated or in your arms while visiting. EXPECT A WAIT.saturdays and sundays are our busiest days.
